Would you like to volunteer with Úna Gan a Gúna, Irish Women’s Oral History Collective?
We can support you to record oral histories but we have lots of other volunteering opportunities too. All help to preserve the stories of Irish and diaspora Irish women.
Roles Available
Administrative: To support the general running of the project including drafting policies or procedures or correspondence, helping to manage finances and fundraising, setting up events, and co-ordinating ‘stuff’!
Archivist tasks: To support the safe accessioning of transcripts, summaries, photographs, audio or video to the archive repository including ensuring adherence to data protection standards.
Marketing: To support with publicising the project or its outputs including managing/supporting the management of the website and social media feed and/or co-writing, assisting with grant/funding applications.
Oral History Interviewer: To interview Irish women or women of the Irish diaspora about their lives between approximately fifteen and twenty five years of age.
Researcher: To carry out or support relevant research into the history of the lives of Irish women or women of the Irish diaspora during the twentieth century. This may include producing marketing material/ blogs/ articles.
Technical audio/ video/ production: To carry out editing of audio or video footage in order to produce high quality recordings for archive or broadcast or to produce segments for podcasts, the website, broadcasts or exhibitions.
Transcriber: To transcribe interviews from audio to typed and timecoded transcripts using a consistent format and style.
What skills or experience do I need?
Interest in social and feminist history
Access to a computer and reliable internet connection
Ability to learn how to use remote interviewing software and/or other technology
depending on the role
Empathy for others and an ability to listen sensitively and react appropriately
Emotional resilience with an awareness of own support needs
Reliable with good time-keeping skills and availability to commit to the role
A good enough standard of English in speaking, reading and writing to carry out
effective communication
What’s the commitment?
To participate in training and induction as needed (remote)
To commit to a minimum of 2 hours per week for 6 months
To attend volunteer or supervisory type meetings to discuss tasks, experiences and
share best practice
Be familiar with and adhere to organisational policies and procedures
